CHICAGO, IL – November, 2024

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs hosted a special screening of “The Here Now Project,” with a discission following, between the film’s directors, Emmy award-winners Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel of Siskel/Jacobs Production, hosted by Telesto Strategy CEO & Founder, Alex Kruzel on the film, the climate crisis, and its impact on communities worldwide.

The “Here Now Project” presents a new lens on the climate crisis for viewers to engage more fully and bring in unheard voices from across the globe. The film is a firsthand narrative, utilizing footage from those experiencing the climate crisis day to day.

“This film is a provocative reminder that we cannot only rely on climate science, analytical tools, and financial propositions to accelerate efforts to achieve global climate goals. ‘The Here Now Project’ challenged me as a climate practitioner to remember we must integrate human and emotional layers into the work we are doing. I encourage everyone to watch this movie and think for yourself on what can be done locally and regionally to curb the worsening impacts of the climate crisis,” shared Alex Kruzel as she introduced the film. “There is so much we can, must, and will do here in Chicago to be a destination city for climate migrants and refugees. We have a proud tradition here in Chicago to be a sanctuary city. Since we will be a city protected from the worst climate hazards and have ample fresh water, many will come here in search of a fresh start.”

Key takeaways from the discussion:

  • The climate crisis is everywhere and worsening, we can transcend bi-partisan politics by relating to the devastation through a personal, individualized, and experiential lens
  • So many documentaries about the climate crisis push people away by being overly prescriptive or politicizing, “The Here Now Project” looks to elevate individual narratives to allow everyone to think for themselves about how to affect change in their local communities
  • Climate attribution science has allowed climate scientists to identify which storms or weather events have been caused by human-induced climate change, “The Here Now Project” features these weather events, which is also a growing cause of climate risk litigation for corporations
  • As much as possible, everyone should share “The Here Now Project” with their networks. Like other films produced by Sikel/Jacobs Productions, the more viewership this movie receives the greater awareness will spread to motivate audiences towards action. It takes everyone’s help to do so
  • Chicago, which is home to both the Council and Telesto, will become a destination for domestic and international climate migrants and a relocation of commercial activity, which comes with opportunities and challenges

With a long-standing history as a hub for innovation and commercial leadership, Chicago is well-positioned to continue its global leadership by proactively addressing climate change and paving the way for a more resilient and equitable future.
